What's Happening at Church of the Holy Spirit

June 21, 2009 - Special Guest Noah Bullock

On Sunday, June 21 CHS hosted special guest Noah Bullock, a young missionary who spent the last three years in El Salvador working with very poor people. This involved building paths (not roads as we know them) into remote villages so they could get medical services when needed, supporting microloans in the country, overseeing the construction of local medical facilities, and organizing local farmers to take greater control of their lives and future (for them as well as their families).

Noah visited our church on June 21st, and gave the Homily. After the service, Noah spoke to a number of congregants about El Salvador, showed slides and answered questions. It was fascinating.

Noah plans to return to El Salvador later this summer and write a book (with photographs) about El Salvador which, he hopes, will make Americans more aware of the incredible problems (and poverty) that permeates the El Salvadorian landscape, in order that a greater level of support will become available.

Group Book Discussion - July 2009
Please join Warden Matt Chafe and others from Church of the Holy Spirit in a group discussion of Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths by Bruce Feiler. This book was recommended by Fred Moser as a wonderful book that explores the common bonds we as Christians share with Jews and Muslims as followers in the Abrahamic tradition. Our readings and discussions should serve to complement the interfaith work of CHS as well as a backdrop to the programs planned this fall with Fred.

Past discussion groups have provided wonderful opportunities for fellowship, to learn more about the Bible, and to explore issues of faith and spirituality. Please consider joining us for as many meetings as you are able.

Dates are Thursdays, July 2, 9, 16, 23, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the CHS Parish Hall. Refreshments will be served. Please let Matt know of your interest in participating so he can assist in getting you a copy of the book.

Both immediate and timeless, ABRAHAM tells the powerful story of one man's search for the shared ancestor of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Traveling through war zones, braving violence at religious sites, and seeking out faith leaders, Bruce Feiler uncovers the defining yet divisive role that Abraham plays for half the world's believers. Provocative and uplifting, ABRAHAM offers a thoughtful and inspiring vision of unity that redefines what we think about our neighbors, our future, and ourselves.
